Geography

IMPORTANCE OF THE GEOGRAPHY

Geography is all about connections of humans with spaces and places. Physical properties of the earth, such as mountain ranges and bodies of water, for example, can dramatically impact the way humans move, think, and act. Geography seeks to understand how physical landscapes shape human history.

Geography can help us understand the planet’s movement, changes, and systems. Topics that are relevant to today such as climate change, water availability, natural resources, and more are much easier understood by those who know geography well.

Geography is a way of life; a day’s journey for all of us starts with sun rising in the east, which a child already knows; she knows it sets in the west every day; likewise she knows about seasons, onam, pongal, vegetation, landforms, tsunami, temperature, food habits, culture, types of clothes, some diseases…

Geographies of everyday life focus on the everyday spaces where humans live out their lives. Theoretical insights are derived from de Certeau and Lefebvre, both of whom worked to develop critical insights of the everyday as problematic and to analyze the spaces and places of everyday life.

SCOPE OF GEOGRAPHY

It involves the study of physical as well as social sciences. Its scope ranges from the physical sciences of Astronomy, Climatology, Geology through natural histories of Botany and Zoology to the human studies of Anthropology, Ethnology, Sociology, and History.

Geography is the study of the earth’s surface & its relationship with human beings. It is a subject in which emphasis is laid on understanding & explaining the changes taking place spatially. It encompasses the various physical, ecological & economic areas of study.

Scope of environmental geography revolves around the study of the biotic and biotic components of the environment and their spatial interrelationships encompassing the four vital spheres of the Earth i.e. atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere.
